The King is Gone

Fire in the woodstove,
Burnin' low
Rain on the rooftop
And the radio
Newsman's voice comes down
With a somber ring:
The King is gone,
Long Live the King

Truck wheels spinnin'
On a gravel road
Long night's haulin' down
With a heavy load
Every breaker-breaker says
The same damn thing
The King is gone,
Long Live the King

You did not go down in a blaze of glory
Like the proud young prince
Who once played your part
You were not some saint in a sacred story
You died on your throne with a broken heart
Your earthly kingdom blown apart

Tiny TV screen
Black & white
Hear the women keening
Through the night
Like a choir of angels
They bow and sing
The King is gone
Long Live the King

You did not go down in a blaze of glory
Like the proud young prince
Who once played your part
You were not some saint in a sacred story
You died on your throne with a broken heart
Your earthly kingdom blown apart
