Statue Made of Stone

Like a sparrow on the shoulder
Of a statue made of stone
With the weather turning colder
Love is leaving me alone
I will watch the summer's gladness melt
Like rivulets of rain
Like a monument to sadness
On a pedestal of pain

chorus:

Oh, love, before you leave me
For the sunshine of the south
Take the water from my eyes,
Take the laughter from my mouth
Take the muscle from my body
And just leave me with the bone
I will weather out my winter on my own
Like a statue made of stone
Like a statue made of stone

First the ground begins to harden
Then the snow falls on the trees
I am frozen in the garden
In the gravel, on my knees
I have staggered like a soldier,
I have fallen here in time
With this cross across my shoulder
And these thorns around my mind

(chorus)

In a frigid February
I am bowed as if to pray
To the blessed Virgin Mary
Come and roll these rocks away
For these caves I kept my eyes in
Are as dark and cold as tombs
Let your sun hit my horizon
Let your light dispell my gloom

(chorus)

There are times when love itself takes flight and the great weight of depression settles almost in a welcome way. This song began in such a moment.

The images are taken from the Stations of the Cross sculpture garden at the Grotto of Lourdes in Sudbury, Ontario.
