Afraid of the Dark

You're afraid of the dark, afraid of your shadow
Afraid of your window, afraid of your wall
Afraid of your traffic, afraid you're behind
Afraid of your body, afraid of your mind
You're afraid of your spirit
You never get near it
As long as you fear it
You never will...

You get lost in the dark, lost in the shuffle
Your voice is muffled by the roar of the crowd
Lost in the forest, lost in the streets
Lost in the airwaves and between the sheets
You're lost in your banking
You think that God made man king
You've lost the habit of thanking
When you've had your fill...

You're the picture of greed, masquerading as beauty
You're doing your duty, so you say
You got the whole thing backward, whole thing wrong
Paying money for madness, you're playing along
But you're playing with fire,
Dealing death and desire
You better start to perspire
Cuz you're starting to burn

You started healthy, started smart
Had love in your heart when you first arrived
But you were raised on rumours, led with lies
Grew inside like a tumour, should be no surprise
You're always suspicous,
Grown mean and malicious
You're violent and vicious
But you better learn...

Repeat first verse x2

This is a signature song, but ironically, it's not like any of the rest of my material. Writing this song in a cabin in the woods at night was like channeling a message I had to sing to myself there and then. I'm still singing it...

East Margaretsville, Nova Scotia, 1996.
