Second Life

Saturday night I did a mighty peculiar thing: I did a virtual gig.

Actually it was a virtual opening set. My friends Uncle Seth were performing at C'est What, but also 'live' in Second Life, in a virtual club full of interested avatars. They invited me to open the show, and I jumped at the chance.

How often does a Canadian folk singer steeped in the pioneer spirit really get a chance to act like a pioneer? That's how I see the settlement of cyberspace, and it was with a measure of pride that I played my roots material in this newest of new lands. I felt like I was paying homage to people like Commander Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian folk singer in outer space, who played Gordon Lightfoot and Stan Rogers songs on the International Space Station.

Anyway, that's the way my mind works. And now I've got what I've been looking for for years: a digital puppet I can steer around in a dream world. His name is Montgomery Nordwind. Look him up in SL. He looks like a rocker right now but I have a feeling he's going to get good and old shortly. He may wind up with a beard, a staff, and a rock garden on an island somewhere...

Meanwhile here are the tunes Montgomery Nordwind and I played the other night. Mind the misspellings!

Like a painter with a new canvas, David. :)

BTW, I looked myself up (weird, that) and my SL name is "Phina Talamasca". I also noticed that my computer's RAM rather disagrees with SL...kinda makes me want to get some new hardware. B)
