Hanako-San
Hanako-san
My sweet flower girl
From far-off Japan
Where the pink petals swirl
Down from the branches of
Sweet cherry trees
Oh my Hanako-san
You're the sweetest of these
Hanako-san
There were tears in your eyes
Like rivers they ran
When we said our goodbyes
The petals of blossoms
Float down to the sea
Oh Hanako-san
Will you wait there for me?
Hanako-san,
We are oceans apart
Yet still I hold you
So close to my heart
Beautiful blossoms
Of sweet cheery trees
Oh my Hanako-san
From the shores of Japan
Comes the sweet scent of perfume
Like your love on the breeze...
About a year ago one of the visitors to the Corktown Ukulele Jam informed us that "My Dog Has Fleas" has a Japanese equivalent, "Hanako-san," meaning roughly "Little Miss Blossom."
I thought it was lovely and put together these highly haiku-influenced lyrics, but haven't completed the tune yet. I do know it goes "GCEA" every time "Hanako-san" is said.
