I Saw the Light

I heard the warm wind whisper in the wood
I heard the music float across the field
I saw the sunshine smiling in the sky
I saw the light in your eyes

Sunlight on the trees
Flowers in the meadow
Swaying to the breeze

I saw the mountains cradling the moon
I heard the treetops tickling the sky
I felt a river roll across the land
I felt your hand in my hand

Moonlight on the sill
Owls in the darkness
Calling from the hills

I heard the warm wind whisper in the wood
I heard the music float across the field
I saw the sunshine smiling in the sky
I saw the light
I saw the light
I saw the light in your eyes

I had managed to get a date with a Romanian girl and was all a-flutter in anticipation.

I looked up Romania on the World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM and found beautiful pastoral images that flowed straight into these lyrics.

The date was a disaster but I've always been fond of the song.

Another one of those things I always say

"Every plateau reveals the next peak."

I've never been a mountain climber, but I've scrambled my way up Silver Peak in Killarney, the Black Tusk in BC, and Turialba Volcano in Costa Rica, among others. I've noticed this to be true.

Rocky Mountain High

I've hitched through the Rockies 3 times. Twice in February. My buddy Phil and I needed a project to do for February break at school in 1987, so we hitchhiked from Victoria to my uncle's place in Edmonton and back. I told the whole story at Phil's stag party in 2000. It took about an hour.

In the summer of 1990 I hitched through the Rockies again. Got a ride from a peach grower. He was keen to pick me up because he wanted me to drive through the night, which I did. He told me he had once mercy-killed a bear some fool had wounded and run off on. He said when he skinned it, it looked so much like a man he couldn't get it out of his mind.

The peaches were delicious, as I recall.
